This is the story of the relationships between King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, and their sons, who are fighting for power and willing to go to any lengths for the crown.
The play is set in the 12th century. During the Christmas holidays, King Henry II of England, whose life is nearing its end, is set to meet with King Philip II Augustus of France at the Château de Chinon. Also arriving are Henry II's wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom the king has kept imprisoned for ten years for her involvement in a plot against him, and their three sons—Richard (the future King Richard the Lionheart), Geoffrey, and John (the future King John Lackland). Present as well is Philip II Augustus's sister, the French princess Alais—raised at the English court, she is supposed to marry the heir to the throne but has already become King Henry's lover... The characters desperately plot against one another, stopping at nothing to achieve their goals.
